Bill II

Uruguayan artist Fernando Oliveri (b 1957. Montevideo, Uruguay) explores the boundaries of hyperrealism through meticulous still lifes. His work captures the tension between everyday objects and nature, utilizing precise lighting and shadow to transform symbolic elements into profound, silent meditations on contemporary reality and value.

In Bill II, Oliveri isolates the most familiar of objects—a single dollar bill—and renders it with a precision that outstrips its subject's own materiality. Fixed to a yellow field with an ordinary strip of blue tape, the bill hovers between object and image, currency and pigment. Nothing here asks to be spent; the work suspends the dollar's function entirely, leaving only its surface: the engraved lines, the soft crease of paper, the small shadow that confirms weight and presence. Painted at a scale that exceeds the original many times over, the bill becomes monumental—an ordinary token of value enlarged until value itself becomes the subject under examination.
