Intentaron llegar al Cielo

Uruguayan master Pedro Peralta (b. 1961. Salto, Uruguay) merges history and myth through a sophisticated blend of painting and engraving techniques. His work often features architectural icons and symbolic landscapes, inviting a profound reflection on cultural memory and the enduring power of human creation.

In this work, Peralta reimagines the Tower of Babel as a Uruguayan monument, its tiered silhouette echoing Montevideo's own Palacio Salvo. Glimpsed through a painted threshold—two dark walls, a round oculus opening onto cloud—the tower rises from a quiet shoreline, ambition made solid against an untroubled sky. The device recalls a room within a room: what we see is already a picture, framed and re-framed. Peralta suggests that the impulse to build toward heaven is neither ancient nor foreign, but persists here, on this coast, in this light.
